Recent Class and Future Classes

Rosemary West was our recent instructor for a 2 day workshop here. We had a large class, 2 new members, and one out of town guest in attendance. Rosemary worked us very hard but the results were absolutely fabulous. Hopefully, I can get a few of the pieces together when they are finished for a picture or two. So those of you that took the class, if you will, take a picture and send them to me for posting on the blog.

Our next class will be with Heidi England in September for 3 days, 17th through the 19th. The project that has been chosen for the class is the Toy Seller Tray, http://www.heidiengland.com/sem_gallery/gallery2/ToySeller.htm. There is no obligation to purchase the particular tray on which it is pictured. You may paint on the surface of your choice. We welcome members from other SDP Chapters as well as guests with decorative painting experience.

In November our chapter will be hosting Prudy Vanier for a 2 day workshop. She has some gorgeous projects from which we will soon be making our selection. Please continue to check back to our blog to see what has been chosen.

Tips for Painters

FLOAT?

She recommends that you "float" with an angle brush and include a generous squirt of a floating medium such as Easy Float in your water to facilitate blending and consistently use Viva paper towels or blue shop towels to blot the moisture up.

1) Use less paint. Excess paint will spread too far across your brush before being being fully blended.

2) Hand and brush position are also important. Hold the brush with your hand positioned well back from the ferrule so that the handle remains low and close to the surface. The handle should be held at about a 30 degree agle to both your palette and project. Holding your brush in an upright position will push the paint into a line and not allow it to blend.

3) Begin by wetting the brush in the prepared water. Then blot lightly and begin striking the brush on your palette. Next, pick up a touch of paint on the toe of the brush. Blend in a single path o the palette to work the paint into the brush moving into the path rather than away from it. Turn the brush over to blend again. Remember, a poorly blended float on the palette will be a poorly blended float on your project.

4) Check the angler of your brush and make sure you are using the full flat area of the bristles while blending an floating. Use a bit of pressure while blending the paint but then switch to a feather-light touch when applying the float to your surface.

5) Always allow the prior float to dry before proceeding with connecting or overlapping floats. Failure to assow the previous layer to dry will result in paint lifting creating a very difficult-to-fix hole.

Recipes prepared for our Recent Workshop

Cheese Ripple Fudge Cake

1 box fudge cake mix

1 1/2 c. water

1/2 c. sour cream

2 large eggs

1 8 oz. pkg. cream cheese

2 large eggs

1/3 c. sugar

1 c. coconut

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Blend first 4 ingredients until moistened and beat. Pour half batter into greased 9 x 13" pan. In a small bowl, beat next 4 ingredients until smooth. Add coconut. Spoon over batter in pan. Cover with remaining batter. Bake 35 minutes. Cool completely.

Blend frosting ingredients:

1 box fudge frosting

3 oz. cream cheese

1/4 c. soft oleo

Frost cake when cooled.

Community Service Projects

The Memory Box Program provides hand-painted boxes to hospitals in various countries for parents who have lost babies. The boxes provide the parents a place to store keepsakes of their babies. Above are pictures of a few of the boxes we have donated to the Memory Box Program at Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo, Tx. Please continue to paint on these and bring them to the next meeting or get them to Sandy Posey.

Another project for this year includes painting ornaments to include in packages for Time to Share which provides Christmas gifts to Senior citizens that have been identified for need. You may paint any ornament you choose for sharing or contact Sue Bartolino for more information.
